That’s right, we’re talking Hair Wash Routine!

Hello, and welcome to LIV’s blog!
I am about to let you in on the biggest kept beauty secret for healthy + shiny hair.
Washing your hair less often.
I’ll break done the science, the why, and the how to my little dirty secret.

The root of the issue
washing everyday
Your hair becomes “greasy” for the same reason your skin becomes oily. The glands in your skin produce an oily substance called sebum.
Each of us produces different amounts of oil, thanks to genetics + hormones.
Though this doesn’t sound like something you’d want, your body produces the oil to protect your skin and hair from drying out to maintain both its health and youth.
So, when you wash your hair every day you are removing the oils that our hair needs. And what happens if you remove them too often?
Your scalp will work harder to produce even more. Over-washing to remove oil will cause your roots to always stay oily and your ends will always remain dry. Overall, you’ll end up with frizzy + damaged hair.
How often should I wash?
3 tips to help you decide
Tip 1. Use your skin type as a reference
If you have normal to dry skin and hair, try washing one to two times a week to avoid drying out your hair more. If you have oily skin and hair, you may need to wash your hair two to three times a week to avoid weighed down oily hair.
Tip 2. Texture matters
The time it takes for the oil on your scalp to reach your ends will effect how often you should wash. For instance, many curly girls can relate to having dry ends, depending on their specific curl type it may take the oil longer to travel to the ends. Because of this, curly girls may find themselves shampooing once a week while co-washing in between. For fine, straight hair, you may find that you need to shampoo twice a week or more.
3. Styling
To protect your hair from damage and to avoid removing your color or treatment too soon, don’t be afraid to go a few days without shampooing. Try this routine for a few weeks and see if you like what happens.
What happens when you wash
When we wet our hair, the water opens up the hair cuticle and allows outside elements to weaken the hair strand. So, its important to never just sprits your hair, or to wet it in the shower without applying conditioner to close the cuticle. An open cuticle causes frizz, damage, split ends, and weak/brittle hair.
When applying shampoo, focus on applying it to the scalp. Shampoos purpose is to go into the cuticle and remove oils + dirt. So, applying it to the ends can cause your hair to become dry by removing necessary oil.
For the conditioner, apply from the middle of your hair working the conditioner done through your ends. Give yourself a gentle head massage. Not only does it feel amazing, but it also helps to detangle the hair. At the end of your wash, rinse the conditioner out with cold and lukewarm water to close the cuticle. This will help to eliminate frizz and dry hair.
